JUNE 19TH, SUNDAY: SHIBUYA SHIDAX CULTURE HALL – REPORT

Once again a near full house for each program today with Southeast Asia represented in a special program & a symposium that followed. The day closed with an Asia & Japan program & an International program. All good.

SOUTHEAST ASIA PROGRAM

For the 2nd Southeast Asia Program we had shorts from Vietnam, Brunei, Thailand, Myanmar & Malaysia. All were extraordinary & depicted the current, modern societies & cultures of those countries. The Q&A raised many questions by the interested audience. Popular blogger & now filmmaker Aznniel Yunus from Brunei told us that there is only a small filmmaking community & industry so it’s much easier to make short films thanks to handy & available digital cameras as opposed to features. This year there have been only 2, yes 2, feature films made.

ASIA INTERNATIONAL & JAPAN PROGRAM 5

Director Yuji Mitsuhashi of “Lies” brought one of his actresses, Kyoko Takahashi with him for this screening. She told the audience that the 3 actresses in the film are good buddies off screen as well the writer & though they do get together for eat-drink-and-talk sessions, they are not like the ladies in this film although a lot ofthe ideas & inspiration did come from those get-togethers.

Director Mackenzie Shepard brought along his writer Oyl Miller for his shorts about an unfortunate guy trapped in his cell phone satire. Mackenzie & Oyl both live & work here in Japan & Oyl said that the blazing speed with which society & culture passes on through the use of smart phones is uniquely Japanese & he wnated to depict that in his script. Mackenzie told us that he asked all his friends to contribute with a lot of the CG work that was necessary & was lucky to have so many talented friends who came through for his short.

INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM 1

What a great finish! For the final program today, director Mitsuyo Miyazaki came out from L.A. to represent her haunting & beautifully shot short “Where We Begin.” Many questions came from the audience about shooting styles & equipment & the use of dancers & story ideas which were all answered to everyone’s satisfaction. Definitely an up & coming young filmmaker to keep an eye out for & many more good films to look forward to from her. Thanks Mitsuyo-chan!

So that’s a wrap now for 3 locations in Tokyo. Now it’s on to the suburbs with 4 days of screenings in Itscom Hall at the massive Futako-Tamagawa Rise shopping complex starting on Thursday, June 23rd. Hope to see you all there.
