Our 1st day here at Itscom Hall, located in a suburban shopping & dining complex in Futako-Tamagawa right on the outskirts of Tokyo, started out rainy & gray but turned into a gorgeous early summer day in the afternoon. The screenings began with the CG ANIMATION PROGRAM 2 which featured short from 7 different countries & a rich variety of stories & styles. It’s amazing to see so many different styles of animated shorts that have all been made with computer graphics & each director’s imagination!
MUSIC PROGRAM 1 We had 2 sets of guests for this music shorts program that featured shorts from Brazil, Belgium, the U.K., India & Japan. 1st up was director Hidetaka Komukai for his short “Passion” & his leading man Takeshi Itakura who plays a high school girl’s track team coach. This story about a girl’s obsession with the coach who takes advantage of the girl is a thoughtful story about those who abuse their position of authority & trust. The thematically heavy film is beautifully offset by the subtle & melodic piano piece titled “Prelude” by Masaki Ishikawa. They shot the film in 2 days while a school was closed.
For “Solutions of Life,” director Yoshihiro Nagata brought his cast; Kazuya Okada & Mitsue Terasaka who play hometown friends who meet in Tokyo where Kazuya now lives & works. The director told the audience that he made up the accent & some of the language that the girl uses to create a whole different world from the fast, hi-tech world of modern day Tokyo.
The day closed with a sold-out screening & talk show curated by actor, director, film aficionado Takumi Saitoh featuring 3 of his shorts & a talk show where he discussed the future possibilities of short films. One of the things he would like to see is an i-phone film festival where for all the films there is only 1 person in the final credits, the person who directed, wrote, photographed & starred in his own short film. Excellent idea.
