Heading west from Taketomi-jima village, there is a boat dock that is no longer being used called the Western Pier. It was made of stone in the Showa era year 13. Since this island is not suited for farming, villagers would take a small fishing boat from this pier to close-by Iriomote-jima to farm. The pier is 105 meters long and roughly 2 meters wide. At the tip of the pier there is a slope to facilitate unloading, and in 2005, along with the Ikosanbashi pier of the neighboring Kuro-shima, became an official historic, cultural landmark. Today, it has become a popular spot for watching beautiful sunsets and although it is very quiet during the day, many visitors arrive in the evening to enjoy the view. It has become famous for having the most beautiful sunsets in Japan.
