Brillia Short Shorts Theater: NEO JAPAN Program 1
A tyhoon seems to be swiping up the mainland Japan today and affects the weather down here Yokohama as well with a slight shower of rain since this morning.
Today's first program is "NEO JAPAN", which has been established in order to introduce more quality Japanese short films and encourage Japanese filmmakers to express their hearts and minds that they put into their works. Most of the films in this category have been screened at other film festivals in Japan and abroad, or have gathered a public attention online.
Today, we are honor to have five guests for this program:
Dir. Tsukahara of "HASHI no MUKOU"
Dir. Minoru Takeuchi and Hiroshi Kuboyama of "Ting Dong"
Dir. Kei Chikaura and actress, Coco Isuzu of "Empty House"
"HASHI no MUKOU"
Dir. Tsukahara created the animation with four other animators and used professional voice actors with whom he has worked previously with other projects. For "HASHI no MUKOU" to be an only animated short among others in this program, dir. Tsukahara came to think of how to add credibility into his works.
"Ting Dong"
The film was co-directed by dir. Takeuchi and Kuboyama. Dir. Takeuchi himself is a DP and had a special feeling towards "ting dong" for their colorful outfits and performances. He thought that it would look really beautiful if he shoot them behind a white background and wanted to make a film with "ting dong" in order to introduce its beauty to foreigners. Dir. Kuboyama also commented that making this film, he questioned what he could do as a creator and wanted to focus on beauty of images.
"Empty House"
This piece was dir. Chikaura's first short and which he had a strong feeling for. Dir. Chikaura started writing a script with Mr. Tatsuya Fuji, acclaimed Japanese actor, in mind at the first place. He could not see anyone else for the part. If he could not have casted Mr. Fuji, he would have cancelled the shoot. Dir. Chikaura also commented that he wanted to create this film to be a poetic piece with distinctive tones and spaces between lines. In addition, Ms Isuzu started her career at Takarazuka Revue, Japanese leading opera troupe based in Takarazuka, Hyogo, and dir. Chikaura met her at Motoharu Sano's concert and offered her a part for her elegance.
