Now in Japan, temperature is getting higher.

IMG_7484 I thank everyone who had come to the theatre in such a hot day, but to watch selected shorts in a nice cold theatre might be the best way to spend time in Saturday afternoon! Today, we also welcomed many guests to have talks on their shorts.

Asia International & Japan 6

“The Crab” is a story about a boy who dreams to be a fisherman just like his father. We welcomed director Ishani Jayamaha and producer Hasanthi Jayamaha for post-screening. It was Jayamaha sisters’ first short to work on together. Through the short, they wanted to tell the fact that parents in Sri Lanka nowadays try to educate their kids to become lawyer, doctor, etc., to be part of a high class society, but its message was to value each kid’s own dreams.

“One-sided Love Spiral” by director Keinosuke Hara, is about a university student who has gender identity disorder. It is one of the sensitive topics, but he depicted the character very emotionally and detailed, that makes you feel like she is a friend of yours as the story goes on. He said, it seems hard to create a story about that topic, but it is not, once you try to think deeply about the character.

And Hara told Jayamaha sisters that he was very moved by their short. Even after the post-screening talks, they were talking about what they liked about each other’s short.

IMG_7552 It’s always nice to see filmmakers getting to know each other during the festival!

International Competition 3

“Balcony” is about a British girl and an Afghanistan girl who moved into UK. Director Toby Fell-Holden said his theme was “tragedy”. It could be reflected on other person, and wanted to describe how racism and prejudice can bring a tragedy. He made this short with support of the French government, and is now planning to create a feature film! I can’t wait to see his feature in the future.

In “Anear”, an university student living in Beijing, goes back to her hometown in Xinjiang-Uygur Region to celebrate her cousin’s wedding. Director KunRu Song is from Beijing, and wanted to take a short shot in the region, to tell that China have various cultures and traditions within a country. He also shared with us, that he actually had to use his own money to create a short.

“Hypnotism for Love” directed by Hiroki Inoue (left on photo), is a story of youth and very sinful love.

IMG_7606

Kota Kusano, acting as a father of the main character, was asked by the audience what were the things he tried to be looked as a father when he is still young. He said, he relaxed himself since his role was a hypnotist father.

Participating in this program were Director Anna Ota from “Initial Enthusiasm”, Producer Perrine Capron from “Cold Coffee”, and Director Hajnalka Harsanyi from “HOBART”.

IMG_7633

Question from the audience to Capron was where she got the idea of the story. She answered, that the director got an idea when she visited Vietnam 3 years ago, and felt in love with the country. There, she saw a coffee shop, where the whole story begins.

Asia International & Japan Competition 7

Our last guest for today is Gao Ozawa, Mana Tatsumi, and Satoshi Akamo from “The Figment”, and Director Kaiyu Chang of “Incredi-Boy”.

IMG_7665

In “The Figment”, Ogawa and Tatsumi had special makeups on, which took them several hours to put on and take off. And Akamo who happened to disappear in the short, was told by the director “think of yourself as wind”, and that was a funny part of the shooting.

IMG_7699

Chang, who wrote about a man with a small superpower, had many questions from the audience, such as “If you could have power, would you prefer to choose a superpower like the ones in X-MEN or Avengers, or a small superpower like the man in your short?” and “If you have more budges, would you make a superpower feature like X-MEN?”.

Answer from Chang was “Definitely, I would choose superpower like X-MEN!”. But, he would choose to make a feature sticking to his own story. And he is actually writing a feature story! I would love to see his feature in few years.
