Today is our last Friday at SHIDAX Culture Hall. Thank you for coming in such a rainy day, because of you all it became another wonderful day.
For Asia International & Japan Competition 2, we welcomed director Takeshi Tanaka and actor Ryo Iwase from “Five Percent Man”, and producer Takaki Nakadai and Makoto Komiya from “Umi-shu”.
Iwase played a very important role in “Five Percent Man” with some ad-libs. The short is about film industry, and there were questions from the audience how real it is. Tanaka said he exaggerated some parts, but is mostly based on true stories. Then, Nakadai joined with our conversation and talked what he thinks about Japanese film industry from his perspectives as a producer. It was very interesting, we needed more time!
Asia International & Japan Competition 10
Director Daisuke Yamaoka, leading actress Sumire Ashiya and Ikunosuke from “Between the Lines”, and director Dai Yoshida and stylist Michinori Taka from “Absence” came out for post-screening.
Ashina and Ikunosuke talked about their roles’ future from an audience’s question. It was interesting how they think about their roles, and I definitely think it’s fascinating to imagine about characters’ future.
For Yoshida’s short, we had a discussion about its title. What is being absent? Is it god, love, someone, or something else? We had an interesting opinion from an audience, and Yoshida agreed with him, but also mentioned that he does not actually have a right answer, because he wanted to leave space for audience to think by theirselves.
International Competition 2
Director Tim Ellrich from “The Bathtub” joined with us.
The long take short is about three middle aged brothers taking a photo at the bathtub together with same posing as they had in their childhood. Tim shared with us it is his 41st cut, and spent a whole day just rehearsing their movements. There were many great questions from the audience, such as “at the end, they are not taking a same pose. Why didn’t you make it exactly same?”.
Asia International & Japan Competition 7
Six actors from “The Figment” came out to welcome the audience for today. It is 4th time for Gao Ogawa, who played a role of the father, to came out for post screening. We thank him for spending so much time with us!
Also, we welcomed director Takeshi Yamashiro of “Moon of Sleepless Night”, the winner of Japan Competition! He brought his dolls, the boy and the squirrel, to share with the audience. He shared that he came up with a story when he was looking up the sky in the nature. There were questions from the audience about his thoughts on stop motion animations and lightings. I thought, that he becomes a part of dolls’ world when he is creating an animation, and that’s what brings his short alive.
This weekend is going to be our last two days for the festival. Please come and join with us for our last two days!
