The 18th edition of the Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia 2016 began yesterday with a grand & star-studded Opening Event & Party. The 1st day of screenings began today in excellent form with a big crowd for the Academy Program which featured this year’s Short Film (Live Action) Best Short Academy Award winner “Stutterer.” Several of the audience commented after the screening that this was a program that they look forward to each year in particular & are always moved by the extremely high quality of the shorts. The 2nd program of the day, CG Animation – 1 also enjoyed a big crowd & the audience were treated to 8 superb CG animated shorts from around the world. There were quite a few young creators here checking out the newest & coolest in high tech animation shorts. For the 3rd screening of the day, the “Save the Earth! Competition” saw 3 directors come to represent their wonderful shorts.
  • Cara Cusumano brought her short “The Bloop” from New York where she works at the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival (she promised to bring founder Robert De Niro with her next time!). She told the audience that it took nearly  2 & 1/2 years to complete the short. The short about a mysterious sound from he both  of the ocean was not only a visually intriguing but the audio soundtrack was very well crafted & added a mysterious & foreboding atmosphere to the film. Well done!
  • Next up was Tune Sugihara whose animated “The Fox of Shichigorousawa” featured the Ainu peoples language in this uniquely visioned short about animals trying to survive as people & civilisation encroaches upon nature. she used a classic tale handed down over the generations & the melodic Ainu language added a bittersweet air to this fine short.
  • Finally Helene Moltke-Leth from Denmark represented her award-winning short “Running Through Life” about a modern working woman running through the city at night to expel the stresses in her life & question the meaning of her life in this modern world. Helene won the Grand Prix for this competition at the Opening Event yesterday as well as the J-Wave (Tokyo’s #1 FM radio station) Award. Congratulations to Helene!

That’s a wrap for Day 1 of screenings. We’ll be here for the weekend before we move to nearby Laforet in Harajuku starting next Thursday. Hope to see you all there! DJ John
