As part of a special edition of Short Short Film Festival & Asia, Masatomo Tamaru—disciple’s disciple of sci-fi writer Shinichi Hoshi and leading figure in the next generation of short filmmakers—will be joining us to host a lecture on the merits of writing short shorts, with a focus on writing for alternative fiction. We will also be screening “Umisyu,” written by Masatomo Tamaru and featuring comedian Naoki Matayoshi, as well as the 2015 Book Short Award winner “Hana.”

Masatomo Tamaru
Masatomo was born in Aichi in 1987.
He studied at the University of Tokyo, Faculty of Engineering, then proceeded to attend the University of Tokyo, Graduate School of Engineering Sciences. He made his debut as a novelist in 2011 when his short story “Sakura” was featured in the “the Luminarie Story” collection (Kobunsha Publishers). The following year, his story “Umizake” won the Grand Prize of the Short Short Contest. Since 2015, Masamoto has actively contributed to the Short Short Awards by serving as a jurist, and a leader for the next generation of Short Shorts. His most notable works include “Yumemaki” and “Kaishoku no Bin (Ocean Colored Bottle).”
