The 5th day of screenings at Shidax Culture Hall started with “International 7” program. Despite the heavy rain, many short film fans showed up at the venue to check on the world’s finest short films. In the program, there was the special presentation of the film “Ellis,” in which Robert De Niro narrates and stars. Set in the abandoned Ellis Island Hospital complex and using director JR’s art installations, Ellis tells the forgotten story of the immigrants who built America. This journey eerily foreshadows the plight of those who currently seek the same opportunities and safety in this country and other parts of the world.

2nd up was the “A&J 6” program. We had a number of filmmakers for this program. For the “Painter,” we had Hayato Yokoyama (Producer) and Takayuki Kinoshita, a famous Japanese comedian who played the public bath owner in the film. For “One-sided love spiral,” which was a special presentation film, we had director Keinosuke Hara. Very coincidentally, director Hara had worked with Kinoshita almost nine years ago, in a feature film. At the time, Hara was the assistant director.

When asked by what the film was all about, producer Yokoyama said, “The film was made with the commemoration of our production company’s 20th anniversary.” Kinoshita said, “The director, a 27 year-old girl, used to be an assistant staff at our television shows. She is so small, and she used to wear a baseball cap like a boy. I am so proud that now she is becoming a fine director.” Unfortunately, director was not present, but we are so sure she would have enjoyed Kinoshita’s remarks and memory about the film.

“One-sided Love Spiral” of director Hara is about a pretty young Korean girl who dresses like a boy & who falls in love with a Japanese girl in her share house. Korean pop star Jiyoung of now disbanded Kara played the lead role & director Hara wanted to show the complex psychological nature of LGBT love. Especially when the love is unreciprocated.

Regarding the film, director Hara said that it was one of the omnibus film regarding “one-sided love.” There will be eight short films in the omnibus including“One-sided love spiral,” and this ensemble of films will be theatrically distributed starting July 2nd.

“I just want to thank Mr. Kinoshita and other filmmakers in this program, because they were so good. This is my third Q&A with the audience, and each time, I see these films before mine, and I discover new elements. Short film is great,” commented director Hara.

The last program of the day was “A&J 6” program.

We had three directors and two producers for this program. Ik-Tong Ryo was here to represent his doc short “Joseon – Korea” about a young Korean college student who is attending UC Berkeley without a passport. She is one of the many Koreans who reside in Japan, some with Japanese passports & some with just “residence cards. The short is all about identity & people without a country which is a subject that is current & applies to other areas of the world. Regarding this film, director Ik-Tong said, “When I took this film, I studied in Los Angels, so I made this film for American audience. But I’m really happy to have this wonderful chance to screen the film in Japan.”

Director Yukinori Makabe brought his star & singer/songwriter Yurifa Matsumoto who’s song “You Named Me Blue” is the base & inspiration for this highly artistic short. “The story of this film may be read in various ways. But I didn’t ask the meaning of each scenes for the director Makabe specifically. I dare to take this step because I am sure that it’s better to explain my own feeling for each scenes in this film,” commented Yurifa Matsumoto.

We had director Hatsuki Yoko and producer Takeshi Handa from “Plan B”. Thy told the audience about the purpose to make this film, and the future of branded movies.
