Announcement of SSFF & ASIA 2024 shortlist (6th)
Beginning in August, 2021, the Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia began releasing a monthly shortlist from among the submissions for the five Academy Award© eligible categories (International, Asia International, Japan, Animation, & Non-fiction). The shortlisted films will be eligible for selection for the following year’s festival.
For this year’s edition of the SSFF & Asia 2024, in January, we received a total of 373 entries. Among these submissions were many films from Japan, China, Korea, Iran, and Taiwan. About 60% of the total submissions were from Japan. In addition, 30% of the submitted films were directed by female filmmakers, 36% from first-time filmmakers, and 50 % from student filmmakers. We received many films about relationships between grandparents and grandchildren with grandchildren around age of 7 to 9 years old.
Also, inclusive films made by directors with disabilities are increasing. They do not need or use dialogue to give a strong message in an entertaining way.
This is the final shortlist announcement for SSFF 2024. This year, a total of 4,936 films were submitted to the festival from 114 countries and regions around the world. Regarding duration, 25 % were under 10min, and 10% were under 5 min. The most submissions were from the U.S., Japan, China, France, and the UK followed by countries like Mauritania, Kosovo, Senegal, Uganda, and Rwanda. Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful films with us!!
