A selection of Academy Awards winning and nominated films from across the short film categories will be screened, including an 8-minute animation that is sure to tug at your heartstrings. They will be showing as the “Academy Awards Short Film Program” at Brillia Short Shorts Theater, the short film specialist cinema in Yokohama’s Minatomirai, from February 17 (Wed) until March 14 (Mon).

 

One title to look out for is Michael Dudok de Wit’s “Father and Daughter”. This film was winner of the Academy Awards Best Animated Short in 2001, and was awarded numerous accolades at film festivals around the globe. It is a powerful non-dialogue short that is animated with a delicate touch. The soundtrack, played principally on accordion and piano, is also something that lingers with you long after the film has ended. “The Phone Call”, starring popular British actress Sally Hawkins, nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 2014, is another title that will be screened. This short was winner of the 2015 Academy Awards Best Live Action Short Film category.
