Five Awards Winners Earn Eligibility for the Academy Awards® Nomination
The Academy Awards®-accredited Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia (SSFF & ASIA), one of Asia’s largest international short film festivals, will open submissions on Saturday, August 1, 2026, for its 2027 festival edition.

Call for Entries Overview
Submissions are being accepted for a total of 8 categories and projects: Live-Action, Non-Fiction, and Animation Competitions (whose winners gain eligibility for nomination at next year’s Academy Awards®), Cinematic Tokyo Competition (held in collaboration with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government), U-25 Project (discovering talents of directors aged 25 and under), BOOK SHORTS Award (accepting short novels), Short Drama Pitch Competition presented by Nihonchokuhan Inc., BRANDED SHORTS Competition.
The Grand Prix of the festival will be awarded the George Lucas Award—the world’s first award named after film director George Lucas, created in 2018 to commemorate the festival’s 20th anniversary.
The global call for entries will be conducted through LIFE LOG BOX (LLB), a rights management platform operated by Visual Voice Inc., that enables content and data asset management centered around short films.
Creators who submit will automatically receive a digital wallet, granting them access to participate in the marketplace for NFT voting and content buying/selling planned on the platform.
Aim for the George Lucas Award!
At SSFF & ASIA, in addition to its status as an Academy Award®-accredited festival leading to next year’s Oscar nominations, major strides have been made in supporting creators’ career development through the festival and LLB—such as 20 titles registered on LLB launching distribution on Disney+.

Categories: Live-Action Competition (International / Asia International / Japan), Non-Fiction Competition, Animation Competition, Cinematic Tokyo Competition, U-25 Project, BRANDED SHORTS Competition, BOOK SHORTS Award, Short Drama Pitch Competition presented by Nihonchokuhan Inc.
Submission Period: Begins Saturday, August 1, 2026, at 14:00 JST (Deadlines vary by category.)

Announcement of Selection: Shortlist candidates for the Live-Action, Non-Fiction, and Animation competitions will be announced on the website at the end of the month following two months after each submission month.
