\nSpecial projects: \u201cLadies For Cinema\u201d & \u201cUnder-25 Filmmakers\u201d<\/strong><\/div>\n
TOKYO, JAPAN \u2013 March 19th, 2019 \u2013 Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia (SSFF & ASIA), a qualifying film festival for the annual Academy Awards\u00ae and one of Asia\u2019s largest international short film festivals, will be hold its 2019 edition from Wednesday 29th May to Sunday 16th June at venues across Tokyo. Admission is free. The theme for the 21st annual edition of this festival is \u201cCinematic Attitude\u201d,\u3000daring to share creators\u2019 messages to societies across the world via the medium of short film.<\/p>\n
In a first for SSFF & ASIA, 4 winners from its 2019 competition will become eligible for the Academy Awards\u00ae short film category. SSFF & ASIA is the only festival in Asia festival able to recommend 4 titles to the Academy and moves a step closer to the Sundance Film Festival with 5 recommendations..<\/p>\n
These will be the winners of the official competition categories: International<\/b>, Asia International<\/b> and Japan<\/b>, as well as the winner of the Non-Fiction<\/b> competition supported by Yahoo Japan Corporation.<\/p>\n
The festival has received approximately 10,000 short films submitted from over 120 countries and regions. Around 200 of these submissions will be selected and presented at the festival.<\/p>\n

\nThis project is a curation of short films by female directors, highlighting the viewpoint of women in
\nthe film industry. It is led by Yoshino Kimura, prominent Japanese female actor, as well as a working
\nwife and mother.<\/p>\n
\u2605Inaugural \u201cU-25\u201d Project.
\nPresenting short films of less than 5 mins by filmmakers in Japan who are under 25 years old, with
\nthe goal to provide a platform for discovery of fresh, young talent.<\/p>\n
\u2605Online Streaming Venue
\nAbout 30 titles including Japan Premier Shorts will be available for streaming online to be enjoyed
\nby all across Japan.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

I made a short called “In God We Trust” in 2000, and much to my surprise, I was invited to go to the American Short Shorts festival in Tokyo. I got flown across the world, I had an incredible experience in Japan where my film played in Harajuku for an audience. I couldn’t believe how big it was, and I got to meet friends that are friends to this day. Filmmakers that I’ve worked with, some of my closest friends. I met Gareth Smith who I’ve collaborated with on almost all of my movies and Dan Loflin who had a short film there called “Delusions in Modern Primitivism”. It was just an incredible trip. Film festivals are very important.
\nFilm festivals are really important. They celebrate movies as an art form and they’re an opportunity to see films you’d otherwise would never see at a cineplex. Particularly short films, they’re the purest form of filmmaking. They are stories told from the heart for only the right reasons.<\/p>\n
