Taketomi-jima is one of the islands in the Yaeyama island chain of Okinawa prefecture. It' s a part of Taketomi city in Yaeyama county of Okinawa prefecture. It is located a quick 10 minute boat ride from Ishigaki-jima, the central island of the Yaeyama chain.
The current kanji for Taketomiis a modern version. Until midway into the Meiji era, the kanji for Taketomi was and was read and spoken as "Takidun." To this day, the local people call it “Te-dun.” The population is 342 as of June, 2005.
