Cinema Museum – Special Fall Screening Event – Enjoy international short films for free!

Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia (SSFF & ASIA), a qualifying film festival for the annual Academy Awards® and one of Asia’s largest international short film festivals, will hold “Cinema Museum – Special Fall Screening Event –” (Co-Organizer: Tokyo Metropolitan Government) in a tie-up with the 28th edition of Tokyo International Film Festival. The event will be held over two venues: Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum from October 14 (Wed) to 18 (Sun), and Andaz Tokyo 51F Andaz Studio from October 13 (Tue) to 16 (Fri).

Six short film programs will screen at this annual event aimed at spreading the word of short film and supporting up-and-coming filmmakers, including the SSFF & ASIA 2015 Grand Prix winner. There will also be Academy Awards® and Cannes Film Festival nominated works to look forward to.

What with one of the venues being an art museum, we have selected a program of art themed shorts to screen. This will include “OBEY THE GIANT,” a film about famed street artist Shepard Fairey, the young man behind the infamous “OBEY” stickers visible in cities throughout the world, and creator of the iconic portrait produced in 2008 for the campaign trail of the USA’s first black president. “A Brief History of John Baldessari,” which features the American conceptual artist talking about his life and work, and “Kiki of Montparnasse,” which focuses on one of the most prominent artists’ muses of the early 20th-century avant-garde, will also screen in this international lineup.

Art Short Film Program

Obey the GiantShepard Fairey is the young man behind the infamous “OBEY” stickers visible in cities throughout the world, as well as the iconic graphic portrait produced in 2008 for the campaign trail of the USA’s first black president. This film, based on a true story, looks at the artist’s origins.

American conceptual artist John Baldessari, one of contemporary art’s most important creators, talks about his art and life. Narrated by Tom Waits.

“Kiki de Montparnasse” was the unwary muse of major early twentieth-century avant-garde painters. Memorable witness to a flamboyant Montparnasse, she emancipated herself from the status of a simple model and became a Queen of the Night, a painter, a press cartoonist, a writer and a cabaret singer.


 

Jury Choice Short Film ProgramSSFF & ASIA 2015 Award Winners

A program comprised of works selected by SSFF & ASIA 2015’s Official Competition Jury: Tow Ubukata, Eiji Okuda, Jun Kaname, Naomi Kawase, Jung Woo Sung and Norika Fujiwara. It includes the 2015 festival Grand Prix winner “Cloudy Children,” which tells the story of two Iranian boys, and the CG Animation Competition Best Short Award winner, as chosen by the CG Competition jury, which included Takashi Yamazaki.

Audience01 The InterviewerA lineup of works by talented filmmakers that have received SSFF & ASIA Audience Awards, as chosen by popular vote. “The Interviewer” is an Australian film produced by Bus Stop Films, an inclusive non-profit organization that helps people with disabilities learn about and be involved in professional film making. “Gotham Jumble Parfait” stars actor Masaya Kato.
