The Short Shorts Film Festival kicked off in 1999 and in 2004, was honored to become an Academy Awards® accredited film festival where the Gran Prix winner is eligible to be nominated for the following year’s Academy Awards®. The SSFF has grown to become the biggest celebration of short films in Asia.
In 2004, from a proposal presented by the office of Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara, as a new platform for the growth and development of visual art from Asia by up and coming new creators, the Short Shorts Film Festival Asia was inaugurated and is in its 6th year. Now, these two combined festivals, as the Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia, is held every June in Harajuku, Tokyo.
Along with the support and cooperation of the city of Tokyo, the Short Shorts Film Festival Asia has taken as its mission to spread to the world, the strong appeal and depth of short films made in Asia, including Japan. Now we have prepared for screening the 2009 festival award winning shorts along with carefully selected 14 short films from throughout Asia and 2 Japanese short films from the STOP! Global Warming Competition which we have created to acknowledge the efforts by the Tokyo International Film Festival to raise awareness of environmental issues.
