In Japan, Southeast Asia, and neighboring countries, filmmaking has become more accessible thanks to the advancements of filmmaking technology, including improved digital cameras and editing software. As a result, more and more films are being produced yearly. With four panelists from the Southeast Asian industry in attendance, we will be discussing how short films occupy the Southeast Asian cinema landscape. We will take a look at common film production styles, and learn about the kinds of support systems in place for up-and-coming filmmakers.

Symposium topics

1) How are short films positioned and considered by the film industry in your country?

2) What is the current situation of short film production in your country?

3) How are up-and-coming filmmakers being nurtured in your country? Are they studying at film universities and cinema schools?

4) With questions (1) to (4) in mind—there are likely to be similar issues or conditions shared by Southeast Asian countries. How can Southeast Asian countries work together to support each other in the future?
