Olsen, the proprietor of a small French bakery relies on his wife's passion in the backroom to sell his popular French bread. Cynically measuring the success he has with his business through cash alone. Olsen's shop runs into trouble when the wife's assistant tires of the conditions he is working under.

"The One Note Man", is a percussionist who always plays in the last row of a symphonic orchestra without been noticed and appreciated by the others. The percussionist has only one note to play with his cymbals to attract the attention of a woman in the audience.

Luzia lives in the countryside of Brazil with her parents and her brother Pedro. When her brother starts going to the school, the girl shows her desire to go with him, but her wish is not respected. Repressed by her father, Luzia learns how to read using her own way. To do so, she may even count on the devil’s help.

France 1943: The resistance prepare a raid. Andre, the only survivor, is saved by Yvette, a young usherette in a cinema who hides Andre behind the screen under the eyes of German soldiers who come as simple spectators. They hide their love until the war catches up to them.
