■About the Area
Kumamoto Castle, considered one of the three premier castles in Japan, is located in the centre of the city. Kumamoto boasts of the majestic Mount Aso, complete with caldera, and two national parks: “Aso-Kuju National Park” and “Unzen-Amakusa National Park," spread over 120 islands of varying sizes. With access to both the mountains and the sea, this is a region with beautiful scenery. The top quality hot springs come highly recommended.
■Specialty Products
Horse sashimi, mustard lotus root, and vermicelli soup are among the local specialties. Popular agricultural products include tomatoes, watermelons, melons and decopon (citrus fruit). It is the top producer of fresh prawns and clams in Japan.
