Some recommendation review by Laura MacGregor, a volunteer reviewer has arrived!
Sunnies (2021, dir. Ismail Khan). https://www.shortshortsonline.org/videos/sunnies
“Things are not as they appear.” Your heart may skip a beat or two when you see how “things” play out in this 6-minute story. The actors’ expressions and movements speak big in this film, with dialogue at a minimum. An excellent example of efficiency in the acting, you will not be able to take your eyes off the screen, nor should you. Do not miss a beat of this film since your heart may very well do so.
Roy (2020, dir. Tom Berkeley & Ross White). https://www.shortshortsonline.org/videos/roy
From sad to happy to sad to hopeful – the range of emotions that this film works through in the character of Roy, a lonely widower seeking connection with others through his telephone. The wonderful connection he makes changes his life. Beautifully filmed in the dimness of Roy’s living room, Roy’s facial expression at the very end is a climactic in this very touching and heartwarming story. Roy has travelled the film ciruit far and wide. Do not miss this chance to see ot at SSFF & Asia this year.
The Blanket (2022, dir. Teppo Airaksinen). https://www.shortshortsonline.org/videos/the-blanket
What are your memories of your blanket – something to cuddle up with on the sofa when you are watching a movie? To cover you as you sweat out a bout of the flu? To lightly cover you as an electric fan breezes back and forth around you on a warm summer evening? The blanket in this film is none of these and you will not be able to guess why the young girl carries one in her knapsack as she trudges through deep snow to fetch a can of milk for her baby brother. Do not miss this film!
