Juliette Veber of the New Zealand Film Commission
"I'm so glad my DVD player was working!"
Pier Paquette of "Buddies"
"It's all in the wrist..."
Wow. it's Saturday 06/13 already with the festival drawing to a close tomorrow. Like, last year, when the festival starts I feel, well, there's along road ahead. And yet when it gets this close to the end, it's always; "Man, it's been fun, does it have to end tomorrow?"
For the first program's Q&A we had Pier Paquette who plays the role of Joe in "Buddies," directed by Louis-Alexandre Martin. We were also fortunate to have Juliette Veber of the New Film Commission who was there to represent for director Jason Stutter of the short & extremely "oh-I-can't-watch" short film that features a young boy & an axe titled "Careful With That Axe."
Pier revealed that yes, he did have experience with muppets which plays a very important part in this story of an unemployed muppeteer & his "problem." The short film and Pier both were hits especially with the young Japanese audience. He's got a couple of VERY interesting projects coming up back home - one, he plays a lawyer family man who's slowly turning into a woman & the other is a film he'll shoot in the fall where he plays a pedophile who commits suicide. Watching "Buddies" and having him absolutely delight the audience in the Q&A, I know these difficult roles will be played by a very, very special & talented guy! Bravo Pier!
Juliette Veber told us all an interesting story of how she came to represent the compact, hair-raising, "Careful With That Axe." Director jason Stutter was in her office dealing with a colleague when they needed to use Juliette's system to view a "sample" short. As they viewed it, Juliette couldn't help seeing it out of the corner of her eye & there & then, she turned to jason & said "I want to represent this short film!"
Once again, filmmakers! Don't overlook any chance or turn of events.
