SSFF & ASIA staff will be introducing recommended events and screenings in the run up to the festival ♪

This time it is the Southeast Asia program & Symposium!

The current status and future of Southeast Asian short films.

Achieving high levels of economic growth over recent years, Southeast Asia has become a “center of growth,” receiving much attention from other countries. To promote cultural exchange and collaboration between Japan and other fellow Asian countries, the Japan Foundation Asia Center was established in April 2014.

With the Asia Center, the film festival starts a new screening program and a symposium featuring 11 countries in Southeast Asia. This partnership will continue over the next two years. This year we will screen films from six countries, Cambodia,Indonesia,Laos, Singapore,Timor-Leste, and the Philippines as a Southeast Asia Program. We will also invite panelists from the film industries in these countries to the “Symposium on the current status and future of Southeast Asian short films.” With the screening program and the symposium, we will provide deep insight into what Southeast Asia is facing “now!”

‘The Secret Passion of Mdm Tan Ah Lian’

Synopsis: Mdm Tan is past her retirement age but stubbornly clings on to her job despite pleas from her husband to retire and stay home. Little does he know, she has been leading a secret life.
