Following the Southeast Asia Program we were honored to have a panel of 6 special guests to discuss the current situation & the future of short films in Southeast Asia.
The panelists included four panelists from Southeast Asian countries along with two guest panelists from France and Canada. A common topic among the panelists from Indonesia, Laos, Cambodia & Singapore was that thanks now to the new wave of affordable & lightweight digital cameras, it has become easier for young filmmakers in even relatively impoverished countries to get a hold of equipment & make short films. In addition, with the spread of the internet, it has also become easier to submit & have your film seen around the world. Panelist & award-winning director Yosep Anggi Noen from Indonesia did make a point however that no matter even if you do have the equipment, you still need a good & compelling story to tell. He also revealed to the audience that his Short Shorts Film Festival Grand Prix winning short film “The Lady Caddy Who Never Saw A Hole-In-One” was made for just $1,000!
The roughly 110 minute symposium had good participation from the audience & was also quite informative & inspirational.
