Torque – Shibuya Stream
Saturday 06/11
SSFF & Asia 2023, the 25th Edition of the festival began at “Torque, Spice & Herb, Table & Court” located in the Shibuya Stream dining complex. It’s always a treat to screen here. It’s a cycling themed dining bar with a futsal court adjacent to it where we hold outdoor screenings, weather permitting.
Day 3, the final day here at Torque featured more films from the U-25 program 2 & the screening of the Women in Cinema Project.
The Women in Cinema Project features not only shorts directed by women but also those made by men & “his” view on empowerment, inclusion & gender equality. Frankly something that Japan still needs to catch up to with other forward-looking countries around the world.
The program featured 5 short film from Holland, South Korea, France, Belgium & Armenia. All told stories uniquely about women, young or old. Some with humour as in “Butch Up” from South Korea about a female singer who finds her place with a band with diverse members. Other themes looked at feminism from stories about sports (soccer), business (motor shows), the difficulties of a daughter-father relationship.
These 3 days of programs have seen good crowds with diverse programs of shorts from around the world spotlighting filmmakers who want & need to tell their stories about themes, ideas & cultures that affect all our lives everyday.
Keep making films all!
Now it’s on to Futako Tamagawa Rise next week.
Come out to see the best short films from around the world!
