Last two days of the film festival here at the BSST, today we kicked off with Asia International & Japan competition I.
From this program we had
The actress Ms. Wu Ke-xi of “Jump Off or Live On”
the director Ms. Vera Ita Lestafa, producer Ms. Yulia Evina Bhara of “Return to Sender”
the director Mr. Toshimichi Nanbu, and actor Mr. Takahiro Ono of “A Scene”
join us for a Q&A session.
Ms. Wu Ke-xi explained to us how to interpret the her role in the film. Also she stars in another short film “The Palace On the Sea” screening in Asia International & Japan competition F.
Ms. Vera Ita Lestafa wanted to make a film with no line because feelings can not be expressed fully with words. Producer Ms. Yulia Evina Bhara shared that getting the permit to film inside the train was the most difficult thing for this film.
Mr. Toshimichi Nanbu mentioned that finding the right house for Sakamoto’s house was the most difficult part. The actor Mr. Takahiro Ono said that the house was so perfect, once he set foot in the house, he immediately became the part.
Up next was International competition D.
We had director Mr. Lee Whittaker from “Catching Fireflies” for Q&A session.
He shared that the inspiration for this short film was that when he went to a third world country, he met a homeless girl and felt really sad about it, but realized that the US was no different and had homeless kids. From the audience, we had a question about what the budget was. To answer that question, Mr. Lee Whittaker mentioned that he recently got married, and he and his wife were going to buy a new home. But the new home ended up being “Catching Fireflies”…
After that we had Mr. Jonathan Desoindre, the director of “The Salt of the Earth”.
The question from the audience was, what is the meaning behind the title? The answer to that was it came from the bible. The original meaning to it is that people that works with land are nice kind people, but the family in this film are major landlords but they are not nice. Jonathan thought the irony of that was interesting.
Then we had Asia International & Japan competition E.
Director Mr. Doyeon Noh, of “Human Form”
Director A Cheng Dong of “Cloud & Mud”
Director Kimie Tanaka of “Hide & Seek”
Director Akiko Izumitani of “The Other Side”
joined us for a Q&A session.
Director Mr. Doyeon Noh mentioned that his favorite scene is was when the main character walks in the small ally way. There was drizzle that day and the effect of that really made the movie come to life.
Director A Cheng Dong, mentioned that he got the inspiration for this film from a real case that he read in the news paper.
Director Ms. Kimie Tanaka shared to us that she wanted to shoot in film (not digital), so she crowd funded the budget.
