TOKYO, JAPAN – March 8th, 2018 – Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia (SSFF & ASIA), a qualifying film festival for the annual Academy Awards® and one of Asia’s largest international short film festivals, will be held from Monday, June 4th to Sunday, June 25th 2018 at venues in Tokyo including Omotesando Hills and Laforet Museum Harajuku among others. Admission is free. The theme for the 20th anniversary is “Cinema Smart”, wishing to share how cinema provides excitement and value to people. The festival has received over 10,000 short films sent from over 130 countries and regions, and only about 250 will be shown this year.
20,000 people attended in 2017, and a total of 380,000 people have come to the festival for the last 20 years.
【Highlights】
*Marking its 20th anniversary, the dance & vocal group 3rd Generation J Soul Brothers has become Festival Navigator. Members will share festival highlights, as well as how to enjoy short films from the point of view of top entertainers. They will also make an appearance at the ceremony of SSFF & ASIA.
*The newly founded VR competition, “VR SHORTS”, will showcase highly regarded VR short films with dramatic stories, curated from all over the world. VR devices will be specially set for this screening.
*The “Student Film Competition supported by FELLOWS” is also a new competition which supports students, who are the future of the film industry.
*The Grand Prix will be selected among each Best Short winner of the official competition; International, Asia International, and Japan, and will be eligible for an Oscar next year.
