Our 2nd day here at Laforet was a roaring success with packed screenings & 2 sold out specials!
ASIA INTERNATIONAL & JAPAN PROGRAM 5
For our 1st program of the day, we had 3 sets of guests participate in the post-screening Q&A.
1st up was director Yuji Mitsuhashi for his short “Lies” about 3 female BFF’s who get together for dinner & drinks & tell each other little lies to make themselves look good. He got the idea for the story from one of the 3 actresses in his film. They are part of an acting troupe mainly for the stage & often get together for eat, drink & talk sessions. All 3 actresses are wonderful & the director just pointed the camera & let them do what they do best.
Next was Mackenzie Shepard who currently resides in Japan & made this man trapped in his smart phone short. Fast paced, funny & yet a cynical take on the “modern” internet world.
Finally director Geon Kim came out from South Korea to represent his very high quality CG action piece titled “Keep Going.” About a young heroine who’s connected to her android & they try to survive a fierce attack by a relentless enemy group. Geon told the audience he made the short while working in his “day job” & has been broke ever since he completed it. Currently he might have a break from a Chinese company to make a feature! Good luck Mr. Kim!
INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM 4
For this program Muiris Crowley dropped in from Ireland to talk about his short “Change In the Weather” which he directed & also starred in. Based on his own experiences of having an extended family member coming out during a holiday family gathering, his sensitive film shows what’s perhaps still occurring in many rural areas in any country where tradition & old-fashioned ways of thinking are still prevalent. Shot with a minimal crew, Muiris had to set up a shot with his DP who also was the sound recorder before going in front of the camera to act in the lead role. On top of that, they had to fight with the unpredictable Irish weather which often caused untimely delays. But the hard work pays off in this very personal film that manages to touch anyone who sees it & knows friends or loved ones who are not able to be themselves in front of their family & friends.
The day ended with two packed rooms. The first was a “Master Class” seminar curated by Cannes Film Festival Grand Prix winning director Naomi Kawase. She brought some of her very early 8mm films & talked at length about her total life commitment to making films & her current work as executive director of the biennial Nara International Film Festival which hold it’s 4th edition this September.
Finally we had a packed-to-the rafters screening of the International Program 8 which featured no Q&A’s but did feature a special screening of “The Audition,” a long form commercial directed by Martin Scorsese & starring, get this, Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio AND Brad Pitt. This 16-minute short film ONLY cost $70 million! Wow!
Another most excellent day of screenings at Laforet. We’ll be here for the weekend then we’ll move right down the street to Shibuya Shidax. Come on down & check out some very fine short films from around the world!
