Today, we started with International Competition 1.

Director Mitsuyo Miyazaki came out for the second time and shared more details with the audience about her short. “Where We Begin” is a story about an old lady looking back her life, and telling it by just dance and music. An audience asked, if Miyazaki has chosen the music in early stage, or in late stage of film making. She answered, that she chose music in early stage because she has to think about choreography, but how she found the music was an coincidence. Also, the title “Where We Begin” came from the name of the music.

Love, war, no discrimination… you can see various messages within the short.

Next screening was War and the Power to Live Program supported by the Red Cross.   We hoped people to think deeply about what is “Power to Live” through watching shorts in this program. After screening, people might recognize that there are no scenes of battlefields or soldiers in the shorts. This tells us, that war is not all about battlefield. It gives so much influence to people around. Even we live in a country with no battles, we have to think about what is peace.

And for Southeast Asia Program, we screened two films. Nguyen Le Hoang Viet’s “The Cat and The Orange Seeds” from Vietnam, and Aznniel Yunus’s “Masa” from Brunei.

Director Viet was asked the meaning of the title, and answered that orange is a symbol of life to him. Orange seeds appear several times in the short, and I have discussed the meaning of them with theatre people, but Viet told us that he wanted to leave it open, so people would think and come up with different ideas.

Director Yunus said he wanted to tell importance of time through his short. He got a question from the audience, “There was a scene which a couple tell each other I love you in front of the mosque. Is that allowed in Brunei or in your religion?”. He answered the reality in Brunei, that Muslims in Brunei is not too strict, and there are actually young people who wants to tell their feelings in words.

Also they talked about film industry in each country. They said people watch more of Hollywood movies now, but getting to notice and have interest toward domestic film industry. They also said, that it is still in the progress, so they can challenge many things. These two directors would be leading each country’s film industry in the future, and we all should to be looking forward to the future of shorts in Southeast Asia :)
