The two discussed the making behind the “Pieces of the Future” which was produced by Short Shorts. Nara said, “We made the film with the Cabinet Office and the Reconstruction Agency, in order to deliver a story written by an elementary schooler who was the survivor of the Great Eastern Earthquake and Tsunami of 2011. Through a medium such as short film, you can deliver a message that the government wanted to deliver.”
Regarding the film “Will and Charity,” Tono explained that the film was one of the films nominated for “FutureCity Yokohama Award” last year, which featured short films that best depict environmentally conscious, future lifestyles that make use of technological advancements.
Tono also talked about the uniqueness of short film. “Nowadays, a short visual content is used in smartphones and PC, through YouTube, for example, It suits the needs of people living in modern society, ” Tono said. He also added that “Making short film was a first step for a young filmmaker, but today, young filmmakers can make branded short films, a longer version of entertaining commercials, made by corporate companies, and young filmmakers can make living out of it.”
When asked by producer Nara about what overseas short film festival are like, Tono said, “Like just now, short films are appreciated not only in movie theaters, but for example, there was a short film screening at a pool in France. In California, there is a film festival where screenings are held in a wine cellar, “
