Sunday, our final day of screenings here at Laforet. Always bittersweet & a little bit sad but always a great turnout & a great day of Q&A sessions!

INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM 5

We began our final day here at Laforet with the International program 5 which features short from Italy, Spain, Holland & USA.

Spanish director MIGUEL DE OLASO came out from L.A. where he’s been living for the past 5 years to talk about his streets-of-LA gritty-real short titled “Los Angeles 1991.” The tense, ultimately violent story about 4 men of different races whose paths cross in a neighborhood market was well received by the audience he told the audience that the whole point of the film was powerfully depicted in the last scene where each man’s blood pools together before going down the drain. Excellent!

ASIA INTERNATIONAL & JAPAN PROGRAM 6

For this program we had the delightful director ISHANI JAYAMAHA & her producer sister SHIRLEY JAYAMAHA. Their short “The Crab” about a motherless young boy who wants only to go out on his Dad’s boat to help fish & make money for the family is heart-warming & was shot on location in their native Sri Lanka. When asked by the audience, Ishani told us that the idea of using the sideways walking crab as the symbolic figure in the film was to show that a straight path forward needs to be made available for all children to realize their dreams & potential.

The other guest was Japanese director Keinosuke Hara who directed the Special Screening short titled “One-sided Love Spiral” about a pretty young Korean girl who dresses like a boy & who falls in love with a Japanese girl in her share house. Korean pop star Jiyoung of now disbanded Kara played the lead role & director Hara wanted to show the complex psychological nature of LGBT love. Especially when the love is unreciprocated.

ASIA INTERNATIONAL & JAPAN PROGRAM 10

The final program today & here at Laforet featured a rare instance of directors and/or cast members of all 5 shorts in the program coming our for the post-screening Q&A! Plus we had plenty of time at the end so it turned out to be one of the best Q&A’s we’ve ever had. I’ll try to keep it short.

“Between the Lines” (Japan) directed by DAISUKE YAMAOKA. Lead actor – IKUNOSUKE.

Director Daisuke shot the film in a huge green tea field he had discovered on location for another film. The sound designer cut out the sound at a key scene to enhance it because Daisuke couldn’t decide whether to cut it out or keep the sound in, a good choice.

“Lay My Bed in the Room” (Iran) directed by AMIR TOODEHROOSTA.

He based this story about one night of a family in deep sorrow after the death of a son from his own experience. About half of the cast were actors & the rest family & friends. He had several final scenes in mind but decided on the next day early morning scene to indicate that life indeed does go on.

“Absence” (Japan) directed by DAI YOSHIDA. Lead actress – YOU HASEGAWA.

This interesting & quirky take on a young woman’s decision to take her own life caused many questions to be asked & a nice discussion followed. The main focus rested on the other lead character who played either the angel of death or an angel sent to try & stop the woman from taking her life. When asked which the director intended for the character, director DAI gave the proper answer in that he told the audience that he had his own opinion but would never reveal it. Instead he made the short meaning for the answer to be each & every viewer’s own. Excellent!

“Quinn” (Singapore) directed by RAVE PHUA.

Rave’s doc about a young Singaporean couple who decide to give birth to a baby girl who they knew pretty early on in the pregnancy that she would have a deformed foot was another short that raised a lot of questions & discussions. The audience was happy to hear that the baby has grown enough now to stand & even run around on her own 2 feet although she was born with no toes on 1 foot.

“Octopus” (Japan) directed by ISAMU HIRABASASHI with veteran character actor Tatsuya Gashuin.

This hilarious comedy about everything that could go wrong on the set of a extremely low budget film shoot drew laughs & a lot of good questions. he told the audience that he based all the little episodes from his own experiences except for the part where the lead actress gets the runs from eating bad octopus which was used in the fictitious commercial shoot in the film.

A highly successful & fun 4 days here at LAFORET (as usual) & now it’s on to Shibuya Shidax starting next Thursday. See you all there!
