Starting the second week of the festival, we had four programs today, all from Official Competition! We received about 6,000 shorts from various countries this year, and are screening 71. Today we had guests from every program and I’ll introduce you some of the talks we had in post-screening.

International Competition 7

Taking place at Bulgaria in 1987, “Chain” is depicting the history of Europe during the Cold War. Samuel Huang, producer of the short, is from Taiwan and now working on creating shorts and films in Germany. With German director, he wanted to tell the audience what happened in 1989, a year before the reunification of Germany. Also, he wanted to tell his message that “history repeats”, mentioning about the refugee crisis in European countries, from North Africa and Syria.

By the way, we are screening “ELLIS” featuring Robert De Niro! It shows the years of Ellis Island, where used to be an entrance of immigrants, through the experience of one immigrant, acted by Robert De Niro. It is a very touching short, rethinking about the history of America.

We will be screening the program again on 14th, so please come and join us.

Asia International & Japan Competition 1

We welcomed 6 guests!

Haolu Wang, director of “FLIP FLOPS”, told audience that the message she wanted to tell through the short. It is, not to be stubborn, because you might lose someone who means a lot to you all of the sudden.

Director Kenji Kurata, who depicted a married couple looking for an imaginary creature “Tsuchinoko” just to spend time together as wife has been sentenced as a cancer, appeared with his actors on stage. Even though it must have been a tough experience, he shared that the idea of the story came from his own experience of his sister. It was also challenging for him how to show a couple facing one’s death. He wanted to know, how the audience would feel about the end of the short.

Director Yusaku Okamoto, created “HANA” from the 1st Book Shorts Award Novel. The story is about a high school girl who has a complex about the size of her breasts. It was Okamoto’s first time to make short out of novel, and said, he had a tough time making it into 15 minutes long short.

International Competition 6

What a fisherman has catched is… “The Man Who Caught a Mermaid” by Kaitlin Tinker was a terrifying story.

IMG_7357

Mermaids are usually drawn or imagined beautiful, but the mermaid in the short looked terrifying. The audience asked why so, and Tinker’s answer to that was, “I am not interested in beautiful things”. She also said she wanted to reflect the old fisherman’s deep desire on the mermaid. Interesting thing was that people from different countries have different imaginations over mermaids. Do you imagine a beautiful one or a creepy one?

Director Kristof Deak’s “Sing” is based on his friend’s story. He said it took him 3 years to make the short, because he first started to write in English and then wrote a Hungarian one. The filming actually took 6 days, but practicing and recording choir part took a long time. Please pay attention to kids’ choir scene as well!

Director Minu Lee’s “Demilitarized Zone” is based on DMZ between North Korea and South Korea. He said, he hopes for peace and unification. He mentioned that he does not want to talk much about politics, just wanted to depict their people. It was his first time to screen in Japan, and showed his thankfulness to the audience many times.

“Happy Lie” directed by Taishi Shiode, is about a couple cheating on each other. He wanted to show how both men and women could be “no good”. What would you feel when you watch this short?  Are men the ones who mostly cheat?  Or is that women? It would be fun to watch with several close friends, and share your thoughts!
